This week at the Shanghai Motor Show Hyundai exhibited two new Hybrid vehicles.

One of the hybrids was based on the Sante Fe. Hyundai added a 30kW electric motor to assist the 2.5 liter four-cylinder engine, both of which run through a 6-speed automatic tranny. Hyundai is claiming the system produce an increase in fuel economy of 50 – 60 percent.

The second hybrid is based on the Elantra, runs on propane and has similar claims of a 50 – 60 increase in efficiency.

Both hybrids can run on electric power exclusively for short, low speed trips and have regenerative breaking systems.
