Think an electric vehicle for less than $10k is just a pipe dream? Canadian car company ZENN is offering a deal through the end of June to offer their neighborhood electric LSV vehicles for under $10k.
Now bear in mind, the ZENN LSV isn’t for everyone, as a neighborhood electic vehicle only reaches speeds of 25 mph and is permitted only on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less. However, if you’re looking for something to putz around town in, the ZENN LSV might be just the ticket.
Up until the end of June, combined with tax incentives, EV car buyers can own the $15,995 LSV for only $9,995.

Everyone: Write your federal congressmen and Obama and demand that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration rules keep up with the evolution of electric car innovation. The ZENN should be clased as a Medium Speed Vehicle, (not an LSV/NEV) allowed to travel 35 mph on roads posted for 45 mph or less. It’s construction is much more robust than the classic ancestral LSV.
Even at 25 mph, you get where you are going in about the same time in town. We must recognize that urban driving is a specialized but HUGE niche. We must stop lugging highway-grade armor and horsepower around during city driving. Cars like the ZENN allow middle class citizens to get involved now in reducing foreign oil dependence and mitigating global and toxic emissions. So turn your “putzing” into a patriotic and globe-saving activity. Slow down and breath easy for the sake of the Earth and all our children.

Everyone: Write your federal congressmen and Obama and demand that National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ban vehicles like ZENN on American highways due to safety concern. I would not want to be in an accident with a truck, or crash into a wall in a ZENN. The public safety should be the main concern of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The ZENN is not a “highway” vehicle. It also goes well beyond the typical LSV in occupant protection. Besides, on the urban roads it was designed for, it is a far safer green solution to personal transportation than bikes, electric bikes, scooters, motorcycles, and traditional LSV’s, as laudable as these modes are.
Like ALL federal and state agencies, the NHTSA has to broaden its vision to encompass the full costs and benefits of its decision making. National security, air quality (physiological health) and global ecology MUST be considered. For example, the Navy has to, and to some extent does, consider what its sonar programs do to whales.
